About the program

The Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program aims to cultivate a vibrant research environment at Mohammed Bin Zayed University for Humanities (MBZUH). The Fellowship offers outstanding PhD holders across the humanities and social sciences the opportunity to share the outcomes of their ongoing research with university faculty and postgraduate students, in alignment with MBZUH’s strategic objectives, through participation in research activities and events organized by the University. MBZUH looks to Fellows who have earned their degrees from leading universities worldwide to strengthen the University’s academic presence and to broaden its network of research contributions and partnerships at the local and international levels.

Applicant Qualifications

 Applicants wishing to obtain a postdoctoral research fellowship at MBZUH are required to provide the necessary documentation evidencing the award of a PhD from a reputable university. They are required to demonstrate a record of scholarly publication and impact within their field, as well as readiness to enrich and activate MBZUH’s intellectual community by exchanging ideas with faculty members and postgraduate students. MBZUH welcomes Fellows from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. Applicants are expected to present evidence of distinguished scholarly achievements and a plan for future research projects. Proposed research must relate to the University’s programs or contribute to its vision and be accompanied by a list of published works.

Objectives of the Program

The Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program at MBZUH seeks to develop research skills and increase the volume and quality of research outputs across the humanities and social sciences by:

  • Strengthening rigorous scholarly publication under the name of MBZUH.
  • Hosting international researchers for knowledge and expertise exchange.
  • Enhancing partnerships and relationships with academic and research entities at the local and international levels.
  • Raising awareness of the research priorities of the United Arab Emirates in general, and of MBZUH in particular.

Criteria for Selection of Research Fellows

  • The Research Fellow must hold a PhD from a reputable university.
  • The Fellow must have at least two full years of post-PhD academic or professional experience, during which they have published no fewer than two scholarly articles in reputable peer-reviewed journals in their general or specific field.
  • The Fellow shall deliver a seminar at the College of Graduate Studies presenting the proposed research project to be completed during the Fellowship term.
  • Fellows must develop a publication plan for the Fellowship term, aligned with the project objectives and agreed with the University’s research centers and colleges, providing for an annual average of at least three articles published in a Scopus-indexed journal with an impact factor greater than 1, or at least one peer-reviewed book in areas of interest to the University.
  • Fellows must include an acknowledgment to MBZUH in the front matter of all outputs produced during the Fellowship term.
  • The Fellow must cite the University’s name in any scholarly output during the Fellowship term, and the published work must include the Fellow’s official MBZUH e-mail address.
  • The choice of journal or publisher is subject to MBZUH approval.
  • MBZUH reserves the right to request additional work related to research activities (e.g., delivering lectures, professional training, conference participation, joining research teams, etc.).
  • All research outputs are subject to pre-publication review by the University’s Scientific Review Committee.

Required Documents and Supporting Materials

Applicants must submit the following:

  • An updated Curriculum Vitae (maximum 4 pages), including publications.
  • A duly attested copy of the PhD certificate.
  • A copy of a valid passport or UAE ID card.
  • A research project proposal (3-5 pages, including references and the intended scholarly journals) describing the activities the Fellow will undertake during the Fellowship period.
  • A one-page preliminary project outline (a detailed chapter outline if the project is a book; a statement of the topic and research problem if it is a research paper; or a project plan setting out steps and target completion dates if it is a research project).
  • Names of three referees and their contact information.
  • Completion of the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Application Form (Attachment No. 2).
